    Get Started

So you've just joined LinkedIn ... now what?

    1. Build your own network. The best referrals come people who already know and love you! You have a huge network ready to help you be successful. Explore LinkedIn to learn how to import your Outlook address book and other email lists. Invite me, current and past employers, business associates and contacts, friends, neighbors, alumni, church members, professional groups, interest groups, etc. If you don't have at least 100 contacts, you aren't trying. If you don't have everyone's email address, use LinkedIn to search for people by name, company, organization, group, etc.

    2. Develop a plan. LinkedIn is a tool, not a genie. If you are looking for sales or a job, do you randomly ask people walking down the street. Of course not (we hope). Identify industries, companies, and then individuals - executives or hiring managers, the more targeted the better. Here's a comprehensive list of ways LinkedIn can be used.

    3. Pen a pitch. Don't just ask 'can you help me'? These are busy executives. Plus you have to sell not just them, but also the connections between you and your target. Write compelling, personal, and professional letters to ensure your requests are forwarded and accepted. Ask for a realistic action, such as an informational discussion over the phone or preferentially in person. Remember, networking is not about you, it's about the other person and how you can help them. Review the various approaches at Creating Masterful Requests.

    4. Don't stop. Networking is a process. LinkedIn is only a part of building your network and getting to know people. Make it a point to meet key network contacts in person. Send requests and make connections not just with people who can directly help you, but others in a position to refer you, such as industry colleagues and LinkedIn hubs (people like me with many connections).
