Maximum Networking
The number one queston I hear is LinkedIn doesn't work. "I tried to use LinkedIn but ... I didn't get much out of it. ... I haven't found much use for it. ... I didn't get any sales. ... What am I doing wrong?
"
Hard sales is always, well, hard. Even if you get referrals through LinkedIn.
All a network can do is provide you a foot in the door ... one door at a time. It's not going to find buyers, it's not going to qualify them, it's not going to close the deal.
When you make an investment in your business network, the payback isn't immediate. It takes time. Time to build your "network equity", time for people to refer prospects to you, and time for people to find you.
Here is how to get the most out of your online networking.
- Build your network. Whether you strive for quality, quantity, or both, you can't find people and they can't find you if you don't have a robust network.
- Develop a plan. If you are looking for sales or a job, do you randomly ask people walking down the street. Of course not (we hope). Develop a comprensive plan. Identify what you need to do, how you do it, and how your online network fits in. Here's a comprehensive list of ways LinkedIn can be used.
- Market. Don't just ask 'can you help me'? How you present yourself and initiate contact is critical. Craft appropriate stationery for a networking environment. Contact your network to enlist their aid. Develop and offer appropriate products where you're giving, not taking. This can include surveys, blogs, newsletters, podcasts, white papers, research, professional association resources, LinkedIn groups, etc. Remember, networking is not about you, it's about the other person and how you can help them.
- Brand. LinkedIn has 5 million members. profiles. Which one is yours? Its huge size makes it essential that you stand out in the crowd. Whether you seek customers, add connections, search for staff, or network for a new job, YOU want to be the one people both find and remember.
Companies brand, products brand, celebrities brand, athletes brand. Now you can too.
